Warm water walk on the road to recovery

Big Sky Animal Medical Center has added an underwater treadmill to provide our patients with the latest in rehabilitation technology.

Underwater treadmills were originally designed in the 1970s for the rehabilitation of injured race horses. General practice veterinarians first began using them successfully with canine patients in 1998.

Big Sky Center's treadmill is most often used for post-surgical rehabilitation. This therapy can also be used for rehabilitation in neurologic cases, weight loss and geriatric patients with muscle atrophy.

Underwater treadmills make physical rehabilitation more comfortable for patients. While the warm water relaxes patients, the buoyancy of water assists in low-impact but high-intensity workouts by letting the water resistance improve muscle strength and increase range of motion. As the patients get used to the therapy, jets can be added to increase resistance.
